Kids' Book Selections

 

Back when I was in college, I took a class called "The Joy of Children's Literature." Among the lessons from that class, the one that has stayed with me to this day is to allow children the freedom to choose their own books.

​대학생 때 '어린이 문학의 즐거움'이라는 수업을 들은 적이 있습니다. 그 수업 내용 중에서 지금까지도 인상 깊게 남아 있는 것은 아이들의 자유로운 책 선택에 대한 내용입니다.

 

Many parents try to take a hand in their children's book choices. But the class emphasized the importance of giving kids the authority to choose their own books. By reading, children interact with the author, with themselves, and with other readers. Through this process, they learn social skills and develop the ability to decide what is right on their own.

​많은 부모들은 아이들의 책 선택에 관여하려고 합니다. 하지만 그 수업에서는 아이들에게 책 선택의 권한을 주어야 한다고 강조했습니다. 독서를 통해 아이들은 저자와 소통하며, 자기 자신 및 다른 독자들과도 소통합니다. 이 과정에서 아이들은 사회성을 배우며 무엇이 옳은지 스스로 판단하는 능력을 키우게 됩니다.

Now that I am a mother raising a son, I think about this lesson every time we take a trip to the library. I hope my child can enjoy the freedom to choose his own books, and that the joy of reading begins with that freedom.

엄마가 되어 아들을 키우는 지금, 도서관에 갈 때마다 그 수업이 떠오릅니다. 아이가 자신만의 책 선택의 자유를 누리고, 그 자유에서부터 독서의 즐거움이 시작되기를 바랍니다.

Dialogue Practice

A: l often feel anxious, always wishing my child would pick a different book. 아이가 책을 고를 때마다 다른 책을 골랐으면 하는 조바심이 들 때가 많아요.

B: I feel the same way. 저도 그래요.

A: But I've heard somewhere that it's better to let children choose their own books. 그런데 아이들이 책을 고르게 놔두는 것이 좋다고 어디서 들은 적이 있어요.

B: Oh, really? 아. 그래요?

A: Yes, they say that the process of choosing is where the joy of reading begins. 네, 고르는 과정에서 독서의 즐거움이 시작된다고 해요.

B: Oh, that makes sense! 아, 그렇군요!
