My First Gastroscopy

 

I had my first gastroscopy at the age of 35. I had given birth naturally, so my pride wouldn't let me undergo sedation without at least trying to go without it. So, I confidently declared that I would undergo the procedure without sedation.

​나는 35살에 처음으로 위내시경을 받아 보았다. 자연 분만까지 한 내가 시도도 안 해 보고 수면 내 시경을 한다는 게 자존심이 상했다. 그래서 당당하게 비수면으로 내시경을 받겠다고 했다.

 

While waiting for my turn, I had to hold an anesthetic in my mouth for about 10 minutes, and that alone was unpleasant. As my turn approached, I started to feel really nervous.

​순서를 기다리면서 입 안에 마취제를 10분 정도 머금고 있었는데 그때부터 곤욕이었다. 내 차례가 다가올수록 너무 떨렸다.

 

When the procedure finally began, I kept burping and felt like throwing up. I waved my hands, but the more I struggled, the tighter the nurses held me. The doctor raised his voice, too.

​드디어 검사가 시작되었는데, 계속 트림이 나오고 토할 것 같았다. 손사래를 쳤지만 내가 몸부림을 칠수록 간호사들은 나를 더 꽉 붙들었고, 의사의 목소리가 더 커질 뿐이었다.

 

I was a complete wreck by the time it was over. Seeing the state I was in, my husband declared that he would never undergo an unsedated gastroscopy. I feel the same way now.

그​렇게 만신창이가 된 채로 내시경이 끝났다. 무너진 나의 몰골을 보자 남편은 자신은 절대 비수면 위내시경을 하지 않겠다고 얘기했다. 이제 나도 마찬가지이다.

B: Yes, I've had it a few times. 네, 몇 번 받아 봤죠.

A: How was it? 어떠셨어요?

B: At first, I didn't know what I was doing and got an unsedated gastroscopy. 처음에는 아무것도 모르고 비수면 내시경으로 받았어요.

A: Really? Wasn't that difficult? 그래요? 힘들지 않았나요?

B: Yes, I really had a rough time. I strongly recommend doing it while under sedation. 네, 정말 너무 고생했어요. 꼭 수면 내시경으로 받으시기를 추천 드려요.
