Coworkers and Friends

 

I have colleagues and senior coworkers who have been like friends to me for almost 20 years. We get together for dinner once every three months or so(정도), reminiscing about the times we worked together and catching up on each other's lives.

​나에게는 거의 20년 동안 친구 같이 지낸 직장 동료와 선배들이 있다. 우리는 대략 3개월에 한 번 정도 만나서 저녁 식사를 함께 하며, 같이 일했을 때를 추억하고 각자의 근황도 이야기하는 시간을 갖는다.

 

We often talk about a former boss who used to scare us and make our jobs difficult. A new department had just been formed back then. We went through a lot and often had to work through the night. We also worked weekends all the time.

무서웠던, 그리고 우리를 힘들게 했던 예전 직장 상사분 이야기를 종종 한다. 그 당시 새롭게 부서가 만들어졌었다. 우리는 좌충우돌하면서 밤새 일해야 했던 적도 많았다. 그리고 주말 근무도 밥 먹듯이 했다.

I spent my 20s and 30s with these people, and we are now in our 40s and 50s. Time truly flies. As our gatherings come to an end, we always raise our glass one last time, wishing for our friendship to last forever.

​이 사람들과 나의 20~30대를 같이 보냈는데, 이제 우리는 40~50대가 되었다. 세월도 참 야속하다. 모임이 마무리될 때는 언제나 우리의 우정이 영원하기를 바라면서 마지막 술잔을 기울인다.

We're too busy to get together for dinner very often. 우리는 너무 바빠서 저녁 식사를 자주 함께 하지는 못한다.

make someone's job dificult ~의 일을 힘들게 하다

The noise made my job difficult. 소음 때문에 나는 일을 하기가 힘들었다.

His advice often makes my job difficult. 그의 조언 때문에 내가 오히려 힘들 때도 많다.

 

work through the night 밤새 (어쩔 수 없이) 일하다

I worked through the night to complete the report. 보고서를 완성하기 위해 나는 밤새 일했다.

If we work through the night, we can meet the deadline. 우리가 밤을 새서 일하면 납기를 지킬 수 있다.

 

 

Dialogue Practice

A: I wanted to get everyone together because I've been posted overseas for work. 제가 해외 근무를 하게 되어 이 자리를 만들었습니다.

B: Oh! Really? Congratulations! 아! 그래요? 축하합니다!

A: It's all thanks to you guys. I truly appreciate it. 모두 여러분들 덕분입니다. 진심으로 감사합니다.

B: How long will you be working abroad? 얼마 동안 해외에서 근무하게 되나요?

A: I probably won't be able to see you for the next three years at least. 앞으로 최소 3년간은 뵙기 어려울 것 같네요.

B: That's not true. We'll just come (and) visit you. 아니죠. 우리가 그리로 놀러 가면 되죠.
