My Pet Marimo  나의 반려 마리모

 

One day, my daughter brought home a marimo(마러머, 앞 강세) moss ball from school. I'm not especially good at keeping plants alive in pots, so my response was lukewarm at firtst. However, we've been living with our marimo for three years now.

 

Marimo are freshwater algae that form a round shape and are found in lakes. Changing the water just once or twice a month is enough to keep it healthy. There's a superstition that says a floating marimo brings good luck. One day, I saw the marimo floating around, and I was so taken with it that I made a big fuss all by myself.

 

But for the past few days, the marimo ball has been floating up and sinking back down repeatedly. I'm starting to get worried that something is wrong. However, I've decided to take it easy and observe it a bit longer. After all, it might actually bring us good luck. 

 

어느 날 딸이 학교에서 마리모를 가지고 왔다. 나는 화분 같은 것을 기르면 자주 죽이는 펴닝어서, 처음에는 시큰둥했었다. 그러나 그 이후로 우리는 3년째 마리모와 함께 지내고 있다.

 

마리모는 호수에 사는 동글동글한 모양의 담수성 녹조류이다. 물을 한 달에 한두 번만 갈아 주면 건강하게 잘 산다. 마리모가 물에 뜨면 행운이 온다는 속설이 있다. 하루는 마리모가 둥둥 떠 있는 것을 보고 어찌나 신기하던지 혼자서 호들갑을 떨어 댔다.

 

그런데 지난 며칠 동안은 마리모가 계속 둥둥 떴다 가라앉았다를 반복하고 있다. 뭔가 이상이 있는 것은 아닌지 슬슬 걱정이 되기 시작한다. 하지만 편안한 마음으로 좀 더 지켜보기로 했다. 실제로 행운이 찾아올지도 모르니까 말이다.

Dialogue Practice

A: Oh! What's that green, ball-shaped thing in the fish tank? 어머! 어항에 저 녹색 공처럼 생긴 게 뭐에요?

B: Oh, that's a marimo. 아, 그거 마리모예요.

A: A what? 그게 뭔데요?

B: It's a round growth of algae. Isn't it kind of cute? 둥근 모양의 녹조류예요. 은근히 귀엽지 않나요?

A: Kind of. You grow it home like that? 그런 것 같기도 하네요. 저렇게 집에서 키워요?

B: Yes, sometimes it floats around in the water, which is fascinating to watch. 네. 가끔 물에 둥둥 뜨리고 해서 보고 있으면 꽤 신기해요.
