After-School Orchestra

My eldest son entered the middle school of his choice this year. One of the best features of the school is that there is a wide variety of after-school programs.

첫째 아들이 올해 원하던 중학교에 입학을 하였다. 그 학교의 특징 중 가장 마음에 드는 점은 바로 방과후 프로그램이 다양하다는 것이다.

I got started with my musical activities by playing the flute at school in 7th grade. I have fond memories of those times, so I suggested to my son that he have a go at his school's orchestra. Because of my thick lips, I was well-suited to playing the tuba. During vacations, I represented my school in various orchestra competitions. Earning awards at these competitions provided me with motivation, and I was able to make precious memories.

나는 중1때 학교에서 플루트를 연주하면서 음악 활동을 시작했다. 그때의 기억이 참 좋아서 아들에게도 학교 오케스트라 활동을 해 보면 어떠냐고 제안을 하였다. 내 두툼한 입술 덕에 나는 튜바라는 악기 연주에 적합하였다. 방학 때는 학교 대표로 다양한 오케스르타 대회를 나가기도 했다. 이러한 대회에서 수상을 하면서 동기 부여도 얻었고, 소중한 추억도 쌓을 수 있었다.

I hope our eldest son takes after me musically, so that he, too, can enjoy such happiness through music.

우리 큰 아들이 나의 음악적 유전자를 물려받아 이러한 행복한 음악 생활을 즐길 수 있으면 좋겠다.

B: Oh, really? He must enjoyed playing musical instruments. 아, 정말요? 악기 연주를 좋아하나봐요.

A: He did take piano lessons from a young age. 어렸을 때부터 피아노를 배우기는 했어요.

B: So what instrument will he be in charge of in the orchestra? 그럼 오케스트라에서는 무슨 악기를 맡게 돼요?

A: He's going to play the flute. 플루트를 연주한다고 해요.

B: Playing a musical instrument can be a valubale lifelong asset. That's great to hear. 악기를 연주하는 것은 평생 소중한 자산이 될 텐데, 너무 잘됐네요.
