Supporting a Soccer Team

 

My son, a high schooler, is an avid supporter of a professional football club from a small town in rural England. The team started in the lower leagues and got promoted to the first division. They achieved good results despite challenging conditions. Unfortunately, their performance declined last season, and they were relegated back to the second division.

고등학생인 저희 아들은 영국 지방 소도시의 한 프로 축구 클럽팀을 열렬히 응원하고 있습니다. 그 팀은 하위 리그에서 시작해서 1부 리그까지 승격이 되어, 열악한 조건에서도 좋은 성적을 거두었습니다. 하지만 안타깝게도 지난 시즌에 성적이 하락해서 다시 2부 리그로 강등되고 말았습니다.

 

I remember watching the final match with my son in the early hours of the morning when the relegation was confirmed. We wer so disappointed that it brought us to tears. Everything changes in a instant when a team is relegated to the second division, from operational revenue to player recruitment.

강등이 확정된 마지막 경기를 새벽에 아들과 함께 봤던 기억이 납니다. 저희는 눈물이 날 만큼 크게 실망을 햇습니다. 팀이 2부 리그로 강등되면 운영 수익에서 선수 선발에 이르기까지 모든 조건이 한순간에 뒤바뀝니다.

 

I asked my son how he felt about supporting a different team, but he firmly refused on the spot. He emphasized that a true fan sticks with the team, trusting the players and supporting them, especially when times are rough. He still stays up late to watch the matches, hopting that his team will perform well and get promoted again.

저는 아들에게 응원하는 팀을 바꾸는 게 어떻겠냐고 물었지만, 아들은 그 자리에서 단호히 거절했습니다. 팀이 어려울 때일수록 선수들을 믿고 응원하며 끝까지 함께하는 것이 진정한 팬이라고 강조했습니다. 여전히 아들은 늦은 시간까지 경기 중계를 찾아보며 그 팀이 좋은 성적을 내서 다시 승격하기를 기대하고 있습니다.

A; That's too bad. Maybe it's time to consider supporting a different team. 안타깝네요. 아무래도 응원하는 팀을 바꾸는 게 좋을 것 같은데요.

B: I don't want to. I want to keep supporting them no matter what. 그러고 싶지 않아요. 무슨 일이 있어도 끝까지 응원하고 싶어요.

A: Oh, I see. You really are a true fan. 아, 그렇군요. 정말 진정한 팬이네요.

B: Of course. I believe they'll post good results and get promoted next season. 그럼요. 내년 시즌에는 좋은 성적을 내서 승격할 거라고 믿어요.
