Memories of High School

 

I graduated from a special-purpose high school where I lived in a dormitory in the countryside. The principal at the time was very strict about discipline and guidance(생활 지도). He believed that the school had to completely isolate students from temptations and make them focus solely on their studies to achieve good results in college admissions.

나는 지방의 기숙사 생활을 하는 특수 목적 고등학교를 졸업하였다. 당시 교장 선생님은 생활 지도와 규율에 매우 엄격한 분이셨다. 학교가 외부의 각종 유혹으로부터 학생들을 완전하게 차단하고, 학업에만 매진하게 해야 좋은 대학 진학 결과를 낼 수 있다고 믿으셨다.

 

As a result, we had an extremely tight daily schedule, and we had almost no freedom. We weren't allowed to have cell phones or laptops. I do think the perserverance I developed during that time has shaped who I am today. But competing with my classmates in such a suffocating environment made it one of the hardest periods of my life.

그래서 우리의 하루 일과 스케줄은 매우 빡빡했고, 자율이 거의 없었다. 휴대폰이나 노트북도 소지할 수 없었다. 물론 그러한 시절을 버틴 인내력이 현재의 나를 만들었다고 생각한다. 하지만 그렇게 폐쇄적인 환경에서 동기들과 경쟁을 한 것은 지금까지도 내 인생의 가장 힘든 시기 중 하나로 남아 있다.

 

I've become a parent myself since then. I see the growing fervor(퍼버; 과한 열망) among parents for special-purpose high schools and constantly wonder what kind of educational environment would truly be the best for my child.

그후 시간이 흘러 나도 학부모가 되었다. 지금은 더욱 심해진 특수 목적 고등학교에 대한 학부모들의 열망을 보면서, 과연 아이에게 어떤 교육 환경이 정말 최선일지에 대해 늘 고민하게 된다.

A: What was your high school like for you? 고등학교 시절은 어떻게 보냈어요?

B: I remember having classes for 10 periods a day and being forced to study until midnight. 하루에 10교시까지 수업을 듣고, 자정까지 야간 학습을 강제로 했던 기억이 나요.

A: Wow, that sounds rough. 아이고, 힘드셨겠네요.

B: It was a boarding school. 기숙사 생활하는 학교였거든요.

A: Oh, really? 아, 그래요?

B: Yes, it was a school with very strict rules and discipline. 네, 생활지도가 매우 엄격한 학교였어요.
