Moving to Hanoi

 

When I was in college, I went to China as an exchange student. Since then, I always dreamed of living abroad. So, when I got married and moved to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, with my husband, it felt like it was my destiny.

나는 대학 시절에 중국으로 교환 학생을 다녀왔다. 그때 이후로, 해외에서 사는 것을 늘 꿈꿨다. 그래서 결혼 후 남편과 베트남의 수도 하노이로 이주하게 된 것은 어찌보면 나에게 운명처럼 느껴졌다.

 

For the first year after the move, we lived in an apartment near Hanoi's Korean town. As a result, it didn't really feel like I was living abroad. Stepping outside, I was surrounded by Koreans, Korean language, and Korean food. A year passed by that way.

이주 후 첫 1년간은 하노이의 한인 타운 주변에 있는 아파트에 살았다. 그래서인지, 전혀 해외에 살고 있는 것 같지 않았다. 집 밖을 나서면 온통 한국인, 한국말, 한국 음식으로 둘러싸인 채 그렇게 1년이 흘렀다.

 

Our child grew up during that time, and we decided to transfer him from a Korean kindergarten to an international one. We also moved to a new place. We decided to move to a neighborhood where many locals and foreigners reside(리자이드;거주). I had always thought that living abroad would feel like a constant trip, and now I finally feel like I'm living that kind of life.

그동안 아이는 성장했고, 우리는 아이를 한국 유치원에서 국제 유치원으로 옮기기로 결정했다. 그러면서 우리의 거취도 달라졌다. 현지 주민과 외국인들이 많이 거주하는 지역으로 이사를 결정하게 된 것이다. 해외에서의 생활은 매일이 여행 같은 삶이라고 생각했었는데, 이제 비로소 그런 삶을 살고 있는 것 같다.

 

Dialogue Practice

A: How's the new place you moved to? 새로 이사 간 곳은 어때?

B: I'm sad to be apart from my close Korean friends, but I've made a lot of friends from abroad. 친한 한국 친구들과 멀어진 건 아쉽지만, 대신 외국인 친구들이 많아졌어.

A: Really? 그래?

B: Yeah. I especially love the exotic vibe of the neighborhood. Every day it feels like a trip. 응. 무엇보다 그 동네의 이국적인 분위기가 마음에 들어. 매일이 여행하는 삶처럼 느껴져.

A: It's great to see you adapting so well to the new place. 새로운 곳에서도 적응을 잘하는 모습이 멋지네.

B: Thanks! 고마워!
