On-Call Duty

 

On-call workers must be able to report to work immediately, usually at night, on weekends, or on holidays. As a result, they always need to keep their phones close by. In fields like healthcare or IT support, where quick actions is crucial, employees often take it in turns to be on call.

온콜(호출 대기) 근무자는 주로 밤, 주말이나 공휴일에 업무에 즉각적으로 대응할 수 있어야 한다. 그래서 늘 전화기를 곁에 두고 있어야 한다. 보통 의료나 IT 지원 같이 신속한 조치가 필요한 분야의 근무자들이 돌아가면서 온콜 근무를 하는 경우가 많다.

 

In my case, I was once on call to perform compatibility tests for organ transplant from brain-dead donors. Since I never knew when or in what situation the phone might ring. I could never fully relax. I always wore a smartwatch when I went to bed, to avoid missing any calls while I slept. Even in the shower, I made sure to have my phone nearby.

나의 경우, 뇌사자의 장기 이식을 위한 적합성 검사 업무를 수행하기 위해 온콜 근무를 한 적이 있다. 언제 어떤 상황에서 전화벨이 울릴지 전혀 모르기 때문에, 늘 긴장감을 늦출 수가 없었다. 수면 중에 전화를 놓치지 않도록 늘 스마트워치를 착용하고 잠자리에 들었다. 샤워할 때도 휴대 전화를 반드시 지참해야 한다.

 

Though it was tense day after day, I felt a sense of pride knowing I could help save a life. However, I do hope that hose who give up their everyday routine for this kind of work receive fair compensation.

긴장된 날들의 연속이었지만 한 사람의 생명을 살리는 데 도움을 줄 수 있어 뿌듯했다. 하지만 이러한 업무로 평범한 일상을 반납해야만 하는 이들에게 적절한 보상이 이루어졌으면 하는 바람도 있다.

Dialogue Practice

A: Why didn't you come in to work yesterday? 어제 왜 출근 안 했어?

B: I got a call the night before, so I worked early in the morning and took the day off. 전날 밤에 갑자기 콜이 와서 새벽에 근무하고 하루 쉬었어.

A: No wonder I didn't see you. It must have been tough to go in so suddenly. 어쩐지 안 보이더라. 그렇게 갑자기 출근하기 힘들었겠다.

B: It can't be helped. After all, the work has to be done. 어쩔 수 없지. 어쨌든 꼭 필요한 일이니까.

A: It must be hard to do without a sense of duty. 사명감이 없으면 하기 힘든 일이겠네.

B: Yeah, but sometimes you get a day off the next day, which is nice. 맞아. 근데 다음 날 쉬는 날이 생겨서 좋을 때도 있어.
