Jacuzzi Incident

 

To celebrate my 10th work anniversary, I received a vacation and spent an amazing three weeks in the U.S. But at one hotel, I made an unforgettable and ridiculous mistake.

회사에서 근속 10주년 기념으로 휴가를 받아서 미국으로 3주간의 꿀같은 휴가를 다녀왔다. 그런데 한 호텔에서 나는 잊지 못할 어처구니없는 실수를 하고 말았다.

 

We stayed at a hotel with a large swimming pool. Warm water bubbled up in the center of the pool's jacuzzi. But after a few minutes, the bubbles stopped. Thinking nothing of it, I pressed a red button nearby. the moment I did, a loud alarm blared through the entire pool area.

우리는 큰 수영장이 있는 호텔에 묵었다. 수영장 자쿠지 한 가운데에서는 보글보글 따뜻한 물이 올라왔다. 그런데 몇 분쯤 지나고 거품이 멈추길래, 나는 무심코 근처에 있는 빨간색 버튼을 눌렀다. 그 순간, '삐용삐용' 아주 큰 소리가 온 수영장에 울려 퍼졌다.

 

It turned out that the red button wasn't for hot water, but for emergencies. When I looked more closely, I saw that it was clearly labeled "Emergency." The alarm continued while the hotel staff handled the situation. My face turned bright red with embarrassment, and I hurriedly left the pool area. Even now, I cringe at the thought of that panicked moment.

알고 보니 온수 버튼인 줄 알았던 빨간 버튼은 응급 시 누르는 버튼이었다. 좀 더 자세히 보니까 Emergency라고 명확하게 쓰여 있었다. 호텔 관계자가 조치하는 동안 알람은 계속 울려 댔다. 나의 얼굴은 부끄러움으로 한층 빨개졌고, 나는 도망치듯 수영장을 빠져나왔다. 나는 아직도 그 멘붕의 순간이 생각날 때마다 이불 킥을 한다.

B: Oh, stop bringing it up! I could just die of embarrassment. 아이고, 그 얘기 좀 그만해! 창피해 죽겠다.

A: Everyone was looking our way. 사람들이 전부 우리 쪽을 쳐다보고 있었어요.

B: I know, I know. 알아, 알아.

A: The alarm went off for almost 10 minutes! 알람도 10분 가까이 울렸고요!

B: It felt more like 10 hours to me. 엄마는 10시간처럼 느껴졌어.
