Making Baby Food

 

My son is about to celebrate his first birthday. Looking back on the past year of parenting, there's one thing I don't think I could bring myself to do again: makin baby food. Along with breastfeeding, it's one of the hardest aspects of childcare.

우리 아들은 이제 첫돌을 앞두고 있다. 지난 1년간의 육아를 돌아봤을 때, 다시 할 엄두가 나지 않는 항목이 하나 있다. 바로, 모유 수유와 함께 육아의 양대 산맥을 이루는 이유식 만들기이다.

 

I started with porridge and progressed to textured foods. I prepared everything by hand. I planned my baby's meals, introduced new ingredients every 2-3 days, and checked for any allergic reactions. Every day, I steamed and chopped rice, mixed grains, vegetables, and meat. The dirty dishes piled up like mountains.

처음에는 죽으로 시작해서 점차 질감이 있는 식사까지, 모두 내가 직접 만들었다. 아기 식단을 짜고 2~3일에 한번씩 새로운 재료를 추가하며, 알레르기 반응이 있는지 살폈다. 매일 쌀, 잡곡, 채고, 고기를 찌고 잘랐다. 설거짓거리를 산더미처럼 쌓였다.

 

My husband asked why I was making life harder for myself and suggested using store-bought baby food. But seeing our baby eat the meals I painstakingly prepared and roar with excitement when trying new ingredients made it impossible to stop. My husband doesn't really get it, so I'll just have to give myself a pat on the back.

남편은 왜 사서 고생을 하냐고 물으며 시판 이유식을 먹이라고 했다. 그러나 내가 정성껏 만든 밥을 아기가 싹 해치우고 새로운 재료를 먹을 때마다 신이 나서 소리치는 것을 보니, 멈출 수가 없었다. 남편은 이런 나를 잘 이해하지 못하니 내가 나 스스로를 칭찬해 줘야겠다.

A: That must take a lot of effort. 손이 제법 많이 갈 텐데요.

B: It's a lot of work, but I am very driven to give my baby healthy meals. 힘들기는 하지만, 아기에게 건강한 음식을 먹이고 싶은 마음이 커서요.

A: That's great! 대단하세요!

B: Watching my baby grow up healthy gives me the strength to keep going. 아기가 건강하게 자라는 모습을 보면서 힘을 얻게 되네요.
