Shield Kites

 

I saw some people flying kites while I was out on a walk. That inspired me to join a kite-flying club, and I started making my own kites. The bangpaeyeon, a shield-shaped kite with a hole in the middle, is a traditional Korean design unique to our country.

​산책하다가 보니 연을 날리는 분들이 있었다. 거기에 자극을 받아 나는 연날리기 동호회에 가입을 하여 연을 직접 만들게 되었다. 가운데에 구멍이 난 방패연은 우리나라의 전통적인 연이고 다른 나라에는 없다.

Making a kite turned out to be a challenging task. First, you cut and finely carve bamboo to create the frame pieces. Then, you cut a circular hole in the paper and glue the frames onto the paper. The final step is to tie the string, and the kite is complete.

연을 만드는 일은 대단히 어려운 일이었다. 먼저, 대나무를 잘라서 정교하게 깎아 연살(뼈대)을 만든 다. 그리고 종이에 동그란 구멍을 뚫고, 풀로 연살을 종이에 붙인다. 마지막으로 줄을 묶으면 연이 완성된다.

The only way to tell whether the kite has been made properly is by flying it. Even seasoned experts can't fly a kite without any wind. That's why it's essential to check wind forecasts and pick a day with the right conditions. When you fly a kite, it feels like all your worries and stress soar away into the sky(하늘로 날려 보내다/ The rockect soared up into the sky) with it.

연이 잘 만들어졌는지는 날려 봐야만 알 수 있다. 아무리 고수라도 바람이 없으면 연을 날릴 수 없다. 그래서 반드시 바람 예보를 확인해서 바람의 세기가 적당한 날을 골라야 한다. 연을 날리고 있으면 온갖 걱정과 스트레스를 연과 함께 창공에 날려 보내는 기분이 든다.

A: I sometimes see people flying kites when I go for a walk in the park. 공원에서 산책을 하다 보면 연을 날리는 분들이 가끔 있어요.

B: l've seen that a few times, too. 저도 몇 번 본 적이 있어요.

A: They fly the kites so skillfully, moving them in all directions. 연을 상하좌우로 움직이면서 정말 능숙하게 날리더라고요.

B: That's true. 맞아요.

A: They control them with such precision that it almost looks like they're flying drones. 마치 드론을 날리는 듯이 너무나 정교하게 연을 조정해요.

B: I remember standing and watching in awe for quite a while. 저도 어찌나 신기한지 한참을 서서 구경했던 기억이 나요.
