Okinawa and Typhoon Khanun

 

I took my kids to Okinawa, Japan, for a summer vacation last year. Although a typhoon was in the weather forecast, we didn't pay much attention since it was expected to miss our area.

​작년 여름 아이들을 데리고 일본 오키나와에 여름 휴가를 갔다. 일기 예보에서 태풍이 온다고 했지만, 태풍 경로가 우리 지역을 비껴갈 것으로 예상되었기 때문에 크게 신경 쓰지 않았다.

 

We enjoyed sunny weather and had a wonderful trip. But we later heard from locals that Typhoon Khanun had changed its course and was picking up speed.

​우리는 화창한 날씨를 마음껏 즐기며 멋진 휴가를 보냈다. 그러던 중, 현지인들로부터 태풍 '카눈'의 경로가 바뀌고 속도가 빨라졌다는 소식을 듣게 되었다.

 

It wasn't until our flight was canceled and nearby facilities shut down that we realized the seriousness of the situation. We were confined(=stuck) to our hotel.

Posts on travel forums contained grim news of power outages, water shortages, and road closures.

우리 가족은 항공편이 취소되고 주변 시설들이 모두 폐쇄되고 나서야 사태의 심각성을 깨닫게 되었다. 호텔에서 칩거하는 생활이 시작되었다. 여행 커뮤니티에는 정전, 단수, 도로 폐쇄 등의 암울한 소식들이 올라왔다.

After spending two extra nights in Okinawa, our family of four was finally able to return home on a temporary flight.

오키나와에서 2박을 더 보내고 나서야, 임시 항공편을 통해 우리 네 식구는 마침내 귀국할 수 있었다.

A: How much longer did you have to stay? 그래서 얼마나 더 계셨어요?

B: About two extra nights. 2박 정도 더 있었어요.

A: That must have been hard on you. 많이 힘드셨겠어요.

B: It was challenging, but it also brought our family closer together. 힘들긴 했는데, 가족 간에 더 똘똘 뭉치는 계기가 되기도 했어요.
