High Water Consumption

A few days ago, my second daughter, who is now in third grade, ran up to me excitedly and said, "Mom, I heard that our country has one of the highest water consumption rates in the world. But our population isn't even that big compared to other countries. Why is that?"

​며칠 전, 이제 초등학교 3학년이 된 둘째 딸이 호들갑을 떨며 와서 말했다. "엄마, 우리나라가 전 세계에서 물 소비량이 상당히 높은 국가래. 인구도 다른 국가들에 비해 그리 많은 편이 아닌데, 왜 그럴까?"

She is deeply fascinated by everything she learns at school. Later, when she saw her younger brother splashing about in the sink, she sternly scolded him, saying we need to save water. "Think about our friends in Africa. If we waste water like this, there will be less precious water for them."

학교에서 배우는 모든 것이 신기한 딸이다. 그러고는 남동생이 세면대에서 물장난을 하는 모습을 보자, 물을 아껴야 한다며 따끔하게 한마디를 했다. "아프리카에 있는 친구들을 생각해 봐. 우리가 이렇게 물을 함부로 쓰면, 그 친구들에게 갈 귀한 물이 줄어드는 거야."

I couldn't help but smile, as I watched her. I hope this awareness will take root in her heart even as time passes. I am deeply grateful to her(사람) wonderful homeroom teacher for(상황) passing on wisdom through knowledge. *be grateful to 사람/for 상황/ 예외: grateful to 사람일 경우-존재 자체가 고마울 때 I am grateful to my parents.

​나는 아이의 모습을 보며 씨익 웃음이 나왔다. 이러한 깨우침이 시간이 지나도 아이 마음속에 스며 들기를 바란다. 지식을 통해 지혜를 전달해 주신 딸의 멋진 담임 선생님께 깊은 감사를 드린다.

Dialogue Practice

A: You know the old saying, "spending money like water"? 옛말에 '돈을 물 쓰듯이 쓰다' 라는 말이 있죠?

B: Yeah, it means to spend wastefully. 네, 돈을 헤프게 쓴다는 말이잖아요.

A: But we really shouldn't be using water so thoughtlessly, either. 그런데 물도 그렇게 아무 생각 없이 쓰면 안 되겠더라고요.

B: Oh, you're talking about the issue of water shortages. 아, 물 부족 문제를 말씀하시는 거군요.

A: That's right. I heard that we could even experience water shortages here in Korea someday. 맞아요. 우리나라에서도 언젠가는 물 부족을 경험할 수 있다고 하더라고요.

B: Then it's important to develop the habit of conserving water. 그럼 물을 절약하는 습관을 기르는 것이 중요하겠네요.
