Why I Keep a Diary

 

I am 68 years old, and I started keeping a diary on my computer three years ago. Since then, I have never missed a single day. I was inspired to keep a diary after watching a movie called "The Notebook." The title in this case doesn't refer to a laptop computer, but rather an actual and handwritten notebook.

​68세인 나는 3년 전부터 컴퓨터에 일기를 쓰기 시작했다. 그 후로, 단 하루도 빼먹은 적이 없다. 내가 일기를 써야겠다고 생각을 한 것은 영화 '노트북'을 보고 나서였다. 이 제목은 노트북 컴퓨터가 아니고, 실제로 글씨를 쓰는 공책이라는 뜻이다.

 

In the movie, a husband reads his wife's diary to her after she develops dementia. For a brief moment, she regains her memories, only to forget everything again, including her husband. When it dawned on her that she was losing her memory, she carefully recorded their beautiful love story so she would never forget it.

​영화에서 치매에 걸린 아내에게 남편이 아내의 일기장(노트북)을 읽어 준다. 그러면 잠시 동안 정신이 돌아왔다가 곧바로 다시 남편조차 잊어버린다. 아내는 자신이 기억을 잃어 가고 있다는 것을 알게 되었을 때, 아름다웠던 사랑을 잊어버리지 않도록 꼼꼼히 기록했다.

That diary became the only thread connecting the two of them. I started writing a diary thinking that if I were to develop dementia, my wife might need something to read out loud to me. I also imagined how wonderful it would be if my late parents had left behind journals. It would have been a fascinating read.

​이 일기장이 바로 두 사람을 이어 주는 유일한 끈이 되었다. 나도 치매에 걸리면 아내가 내게 읽어 줄 뭔가가 필요할 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들어서 일기를 쓰기 시작했다. 또한 돌아가신 부모님께서 남기신 일기장이 있었다면 얼마나 좋았을까 하는 생각도 들었다. 자식들이 그것을 흥미롭게 읽었을 것이다.
