Paper Books
Back in my day, most information could be found in paper books. That's why I still have a soft spot for them. Even after reading a book that I took out from the library, I might buy a copy to hold on to. I sometimes buy a book to begin with if it seems worth having. If I buy a book, it's to underline passages and jot down my thoughts in the margins.
모든 정보를 종이책에서만 찾아볼 수 있던 세대였던 나는 아직도 종이책을 무척 좋아한다. 도서관에서 책을 빌려 읽고 나서도, 구입해 보관하는 경우가 있다. 소장 가치가 있어 보이면 처음부터 구입하는 경우도 있다. 책을 구입하는 경우는 글에 밑줄을 긋고 여백에 내 감상을 적기 위해서이다.
E-books have become commonplace, and I respect the opinion that we should think twice about using paper books, considering environmental issues. But, as someone who studied in the analog era, I enjoy flipping through pages and it's easier to concentrate that way.
전자책이 보편화되고, 환경 문제를 생각하면 종이책의 소비도 신중히 생각해 봐야 한다는 의견을 존중하기는 한다. 다만, 아날로그 시대에 공부를 했던 사람으로서 나는 종이를 넘기는 일이 즐겁고 그렇게 해야 집중하기도 더 쉽다.
The book I bought recently is nearly 1,000 pages long. The footnotes alone take up about 100 pages. I'm the kind of reader who doesn't read footnotes. It occured to me that we could save around 100 pages if the footnotes could be accessed via QR codes.
이번에 내가 산 책은 거의 1000페이지였고, 각주만 해도 100페이지 정도였다. 나는 각주를 읽지 않는 독자이다. 각주 부분은 QR코드로 확인할 수 있게 해 준다면, 종이를 100페이지 정도 절약할 수 있을 거라는 생각이 들었다.

A: Oh, I see. You're a thorough reader. 아, 그렇군요. 정독파네요.
B: Yes, that's why it takes me forever to read a book cover to cover.
네, 그래서 책 한 권을 처음부터 끝까지 다 읽으려면 한참 걸려요.
