Medical Volunteer Work

​

I am a medical specialist working at a university hospital. I recently saw a scene in a TV show where the protagonist felt very rewarded by doing medical volunteer work in a rural area. I was deeply moved by that scene, and I felt the urge to participate in medical volunteer work myself.

저는 대학 병원에서 일하고 있는 전공의입니다. 최근 한 TV 드라마에서 주인공이 농촌 의료 봉사를 하며 큰 보람을 느낀는 장면을 보았습니다. 그 장면을 보면서 큰 감동을 받았고, 저도 직접 의료 봉사를 해 보고 싶다는 생각이 들었습니다.

As luck would have it, I came across a notice on the hospital bulletin board recruiting a medical voluteer team for a rural area in Gangwon Province. As soon as I saw it, I got permission from my professor and was selected to represent our department for the rural medical volunteer work.

때마침 병원 게시파넹서 강원도의 한 농촌으로 갈 의료 봉사단을 모집한다는 공고문을 보게 되었스빈다. 저는 글을 보자마자 교수님의 허락을 받고, 과의 대표로 뽑혀 의료 봉사를 가게 되었습니다.

It wasn't easy doing community service in a rural area, far from home and in hot weather. But seeing elderly patients smiling after receiving treatment from me was so rewarding that it made me forget all about the hardhship. If given the opportunity, I would love to participate again.

더운 날씨에 먼 타지에서 농촌 봉사 활동을 하는 것은 쉽지 않았습니다. 하지만 저의 진료를 받고 나서 웃으시는 어르신들을 보면 힘든 것을 모두 잊을 정도로 큰 보람을 느꼈습니다. 기회가 된다면 저는 다시 한 번 참여하고 싶습니다.

A: Wasn't it tough in the sweltering heat? 날씨도 무더운데 힘들지는 않으셨어요?

B: I felt such a great sense of fulfillment that it didn't feel hard at all. 보람이 너무 커서 힘든지도 몰랐어요.

A: That's wonderful. 멋지네요.

B: I gave a lot of thought to what kind of doctor I should become through the experience. 이번 경험을 통해 어떤 의사가 되어야 하는지 심도 있게 고민해 봤어요.
