Looking After Stray Cats

 

I am a father raising a child in Sejong City, and also a father figure to stray cats(캣맘,캣대디 안씀) in the neighborhood.

저는 세종시에서 한 아이를 키우는 아빠이면서 동시에 동네 길고양이들의 캣대디입니다.

 

One day in the fall of 2017, I came across a mother cat and her litter of four kittens near the recycling area of our apartment complex. They cried sadly, as if telling me they were hungry, so I started feeding them. Five years have already passed since then.

2017년 가을 어느 날, 아파트 단지 분리수거장 근처에서 우연히 아기 고양이 네 마리와 어미 고양이를 만나게 되었습니다. 마치 저에게 배가 고프다고 말하듯 슬프게 울어 대서 밥을 주기 시작하였는데 그 이후로 벌써 5년이라는 시간이 지났습니다.

 

My daily routine involves finishing dinner after work and then immediately going around the neighborhood to feed the cats. I give them food, water and sometimes tasty treats. Every spring and fall, I have the cats spayed(암컷에만 씀) or neutered(주로 수컷에 씀) to prevent furter population growth.

퇴근 후 저녁 식사를 끝내고 바로 동네를 돌면서 고양이들에게 밥을 주는 것이 저의 하루 루틴이 되었습니다. 사료와 물, 때로는 맛있는 간식을 주기도 합니다. 매년 봄, 가을에는 고양이들에게 중성화 수술을 시켜 주면서, 개체 수가 더 이상 늘어나기 않도록 하고 있습니다.

 

Feeding them every single day can sometimes be physically exhausting. But seeing the cats eat their fill and greet me warmly has become a source of energy in my life!

하루도 거르지 않고 밥을 주다 보니 가끔은 체력적으로 힘이 들 때도 있습니다. 하지만 고양이들이 배부르게 먹고 저를 반갑게 맞아 주는 모습을 보는 것이 제 삶의 활력소가 되었답니다!

B: Yes, I feel uneasy now if I miss even a single day. 네, 이제 하루라도 안 주면 마음이 쓰이네요.

A: After all, even people get hungry if they skip a meal. 하긴, 사람도 한끼만 굶어도 배가 고프잖아요.

B: Exactly. That's why I make sure to feed them every day. 맞아요. 저도 그 생각으로 매일 밥을 꼭 주게 되네요.

A: Your love for animals is heartwarming. 동물을 사랑하는 모습이 참 따뜻해 보여요.

B: I never imagined I would become a cat person myself. 저도 제 스스로가 고양이를 좋아하게 되리라고는 생각지도 못했어요.
