My War Against Mosquitoes

 

When my eldest daughter was five years old, she was so thin and weak that she frequently fell ill. I was constantly worried. One summer night, I put her to sleep inside a mosquito net, but she still got about ten mosquito bites on her feet alone. a mosquito had managed to get inside the net even though I had turned on a mosquito repellent. ex) I got a mosquito bite.

첫째 딸은 다섯 살 때 워낙 마르고 약해서 잔병치레를 많이 했던 아이라, 걱정이 많았다. 어느 여름밤, 모기장 안에서 잠을 재웠는데도 발에만 열 군데 정도 모기에 물렸다. 모기약을 켜 놓았음에도 불구하고, 모기 한 마리가 모기장 안에 들어와 있었던 것이다.

 

My daughter's feet started to swell up. Her breathing and haertbeat became irregular, and she wouldn't wake up when I tried to rouse her. I was so scared that I took her to the ER. Fortunately, her breathing stablized on the way, and she woke up during the examination.

아이의 발이 퉁퉁 부어오르기 시작했다. 아이의 호흡과 심장 박동이 불규칙해졌고, 내가 깨워도 잘 일어나지 못했다. 나는 너무 놀라서 아이를 응급실에 데리고 갔다. 다행히 가는 중에 호흡이 안정되었다. 진료를 보는 동안에 잠도 깼다.

 

However, the doctor said that even a mosquito bite could require a procedure if the inflammation is severe.(mild<moderate<severe) That really gave me a scare. Since then, I've made it a habit to deal with any mosquito that gets into the house before I go to bed. Sadly, I must kill any mosquito I come across.

하지만 의사 선생님이 모기에 물려도 염증이 심하면 시술이 필요할 수도 있다고 하셔서 너무 무섭고 두려웠다. 그 이후로는 집에 모기 한 마리만 들어와도 꼭 처리하고 자야 하는 버릇이 생겼다. 나에게 모기는 보이면 꼭 죽여야 하는 슬픈 인연이다.

Dialogue Practice

A: I had a hard time sleeping last night because of mosquitoes. 어제 저녁에 모기 때문에 잠을 설쳤어요.

B: Oh no, what happened? 아이고, 어떻게 된 거예요?

A: I got bitten at least ten times all over my body. 온몸에 최소 열 군데는 물렸어요.

B: Why didn't you turn on a mosquito repellent? 모기약 좀 틀어 놓지 그러셨어요?

A: I woke up in the middle of the night and plugged it in, but I still got bitten. 한밤중에 일어나서 모기약을 꽂아 놓았는데도, 엄청 물렸어요.

B: It feels like mosquitoes these days have gotten stronger than before. 요즘 모기들이 예전보다 더 강해진 느낌이에요.
