Teaching Kids Economics

 

A variety show that I enjoy watching once featured the economics education being taught by a homeroom teacher at an elementary school in Busan.

제가 즐겨 보는 한 예능 프로그램에서 부산의 한 초등학교 담임 선생님이 가르친 경제 교육을 주제로 다룬 적이 있었습니다.

 

The teacher had the children come up with(생각해 내다) a country and engage in work activities. The kids saved money, spent it, and paid taxes. They even invested in real estate and traded stocks, just like in real life. The program showed how the teacher used hands-on experiences to teach the kids about economics.

선생님은 아이들이 나라를 세우고 직업 활동을 하도록 했습니다. 아이들은 저축을 하고, 소비를 하고, 세금을 냈습니다. 심지어 부동산 투자와 주식 거래까지 실전처럼 했습니다. 프로그램은 선생님이 그렇게 직접 경험을 통해 아이들에게 경제를 가르친다는 내용이었습니다.

 

It was a refreshing change of pace to see how the teacher used practical experience to teach the importance of money management in a fun and engaging(쉽게 다가갈 수 있는, 와 닿는) way. It would be so wonderful if more schools could offer such enjoyable economics education! It mad me think that I should start teaching my 7-year-old adughter about economoics at home right away.

돈 관리의 중요성을 체험을 통해 재미있게 가르쳐 주는 선생님의 방식이 신선한 충격으로 다가왔습니다. 더 많은 학교에서 이렇게 즐겁게 경제 교육을 해 줄 수 있다면 얼마나 좋을까요! 당장 우리 7살 된 딸에게도 집에서 경제 교육을 시작해야겠다고 생각했습니다.

A: Do you talk to your kids about economics? 아이들에게 경제 관련된 이야기를 해 주세요?

B: Yes, I do from time to time. 네, 종종 하고 있어요.

A: I'm teaching my kids about the concepts of working, spending, and saving. 저는 아이들에게 일을 하고, 소비를 하고, 저축을 하는 개념을 알려 주고 있어요.

B: Oh, really? 아, 정말요?

A: Yes, I'm thinking about introducing them to the concepts of taxes and investing as well. 네, 이제 세금과 투자의 개념도 알려 줄까 해요.

B: Wow, that will really help them develop financial awareness from a young age. 와, 어린 나이부터 경제 관념을 기르는 데 큰 도움이 되겠네요.
