You Are What You Eat

 

I recently watched an interesting documentary called "You Are What You Eat." The documentary begins with an experiment where identical twins who share nearly the same genes each go on a vegetarian diet and an omnivorous(옴'니'버러스) diet, to compare between the two.

​최근에 나는 'You Are What You Eat'라는 흥미로운 다큐멘터리를 봤다. 다큐멘터리는 유전자가 거의 동일한 일란성 쌍둥이들에게 각각 채식성 식단과 잡식성 식단을 제공하고, 둘을 비교하는 실험으 로 시작된다.

 

But the researchers don't stop there. They go further to show how the ingredients we consume impact the planet. This was the most fascinating part of the documentary. Excessive meat consumption and the resulting industrialized food production are said to(~라고 알려져 있다) have a serious negative impact on the environment.

​그러나 연구진은 거기서 그치지 않고, 더 나아가 우리가 먹는 식재료가 지구에 미치는 영향까지 보여 주려고 노력했다. 이것이 이 다큐멘터리에서 가장 흥미로운 부분이었다.

 

It even made me think that we might have to choose a vegetarian lifestyle just to survive. We can't just quit meat cold turkey, but we should gradually reduce our meat consumption for the sake of the next generation.

​과도한 육식과 그에 따른 산업형 식량 생산은 지구 환경에 심각한 악영향을 끼친다고 한다. 이제는 생존을 위해 불가피하게 채식을 선택해야 할 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들었다. 당장 극단적으로 고기를 끊 을 수는 없겠지만, 우리 다음 세대를 위해 육류 소비를 조금씩 줄여 나가야겠다.

A : Vegetarian menus have really come a long way. Some dishes taste just like meat. 요즘 채식 메뉴가 많이 진화했어. 고기 맛 나는 요리도 있어.

B : Really? Well, let's give it a try then. 정말? 그럼 한번 먹어 보지 뭐.
