Jean Valjean Bank

 

My spouse and I made a donation today to the "Jean Valjean Bank." This bank takes its name from Jean Valjean, the main character in the novel "Les Misérables(레미저'라'블, 약자로 레미즈)." The bank is different from a regular bank that takes deposits and lends money with interest.

​우리 부부는 오늘 '장발장 은행'에 기부를 했습니다. 이 은행은 소설 '레 미제라블'의 주인공 장발장에 서 이름을 가져왔습니다. 이 은행은 시중 은행처럼 예금을 받고 이자와 함께 돈을 빌려주는 은행이 아닙니다.

 

If someone receives a fine as punishment in Korea, they have to pay within a month. Many people end up being detained if they can't come up with the money. This bank accepts applications from such individuals, pays their fines on their behalf, and allows them to repay(=pay back) within a year without interest.

우리나라에서 벌금형을 받으면 한 달 내에 벌금을 내야 되는데, 많은 사람들이 돈을 마련하지 못하면 구속이 됩니다. 이 은행은 이런 사람들의 신청을 받아서 벌금을 대신 내 주고, 일 년 내에 이자 없이 상환하게 합니다.

About half of the borrowers manage to(가까스로 ~하다) repay within a year. For those unable to repay in full, they can pay in small monthly installments. The loan limit is 3 million won. Priority is given to young heads of households, minors, and low-income individuals.

빌려 간 사람들 중에 일 년 내에 돈을 갚는 경우는 절반 정도가 됩니다. 전액을 갚기 어려운 사람들은 다달이 소액이라도 갚으면 됩니다. 빌려주는 한도는 300만 원까지입니다. 우선 대상자는 소년 소녀 가장, 미성년자, 저소득층입니다.​

B: It doesn't ring a bell. What is that? 잘 모르겠네요. 그게 뭐예요?

A: The bank pays fines on behalf of people who are socially disadvantaged and collects them later. 사회적 약자들의 벌금을 대신 내 주고, 나중에 다시 받는 은행이에요.

B: Something like that exists? 그런 게 있어요?

A: Yes, it's a bank that grants freedom to people who would otherwise end up in prison. 네, 그렇게 하지 않으면 교도소에 가게 되는 사람들에게 자유를 주기 위한 은행이죠.

B: Oh, that's a wonderful cause. 아, 좋은 취지네요.
