Heating Bills

 

I stay with my parents during vacations, which means I leave my studio (apartment) empty. A little while before the last vacation ended, I returned to my studio to prepare for the new semester. It wasn't particularly cold this winter, so I hardly used the heating.

​나는 방학 때마다 부모님 댁에서 지내서, 내가 사는 원룸은 비워 놓는다. 지난번 방학이 끝나갈 무렵, 나는 새 학기를 준비하기 위해 다시 원룸으로 왔다. 올해 겨울은 많이 춥지 않아서 난방을 거의 안했다.

 

But a few days later, a signal appeared on the thermostat and the boiler suddenly kicked in. It turned out there's a feature that automatically turns on the boiler if the temperature drops below 5 degrees.

​그러나 며칠 후 온도 조절기에 무슨 표시가 뜨더니 갑자기 보일러가 돌아갔다. 알고 보니 온도가 5도 이하로 내려가면 보일러가 자동으로 돌아가도록 하는 기능이 있었다.

I checked the flow meter under the sink just in case, and it showed 600m3(큐빅미터스/제곱미터:스퀘어미터). That would translate(환산되다) to a bill of over 1 million won. I was so worried that I couldn't sleep a wink that night. I contacted the boiler company and apartment maintenance the next morning to resolve the issue. Thankfully, the reading(수치) was an accumulated figure. After that, I replaced the old boiler.

혹시 몰라 세면대 밑에 유량계를 살펴보았더니 600m3이었다. 이를 요금으로 따지면 100만 원이 넘었다. 나는 너무 걱정이 되어서 그날 밤 잠을 한숨도 못 잤다.다음 날 아침 보일러 업체와 관리 사무소에 연락을 하여 조치를 취했다. 다행히 그 수치는 누적 수치였다. 그 후 나는 보일러를 새것으로 교체하였다.

B: I think it's higher in the winter. 겨울에 더 나오는 것 같아요.

A: Really? Mine is higher in the summer. 그래요? 저는 여름에 더 나오는데.

B: You must run the air conditioner a lot. 에어컨을 많이 들어 놓나 봐요.

A: Yes, I can't stand the heat. I always blast(=crank up) the A/C. 네, 제가 더위를 많이 타는 편이라서요. 항상 에어컨을 세게 틀어요.

B: I'm the opposite. I get cold easily. 저는 반대예요. 추위를 많이 타요.
