Spouses and Allies

 

The year before last, my son and two daughters finally graduated (from) college. But their way of thinking(=mindset) as adults was quite different from ours. No matter what I said, they always talked back based on their own reasoning.

재작년에 드디어 아들과 두 딸이 모두 대학을 졸업했습니다. 그런데 성인이 된 아이들의 사고방식은 우리와는 많이 달랐습니다. 내가 무슨 말을 하든, 거기에 꼭 나름의 논리를 가지고 따졌습니다.

After being shocked by the kids a few times, I told my husband, "We only have each other now. We need to help each other and be on the same page." To be honest, my husband and I hadn't always gotten along. But now, we're finally on the same team.

아이들로 인해 몇 번의 충격을 받고 나서 저는 남편에게 말했습니다. "이제 아군은 우리뿐이야. 우리 둘이 서로 돕고 마음을 맞춰야 돼."라고요. 사실 남편과 저는 그동안 그렇게 친하게 지내지는 못했습니다. 그런데 이제야 비로소 우리는 한편이 되었습니다.

Meanwhile, l've also realized that the kids are all grown up, so we need to learn how to let go a bit. I want to learn how to be a parent who isn't just a boomer, but more like a friend instead.

한편으로 이제는 아이들이 다 컸으니, 우리도 조금은 내려놓는 법을 배워야 한다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 아이들에게 꼰대 부모가 아닌, 친구 같은 부모가 되는 법을 배우고 싶습니다.

Dialogue Practice

A: Your kids are all grown up now, aren't they? 아이들이 이제 다 컸죠?

B: Yes, all three have graduated from college and are holding down jobs. 그럼요. 셋 다 대학을 졸업하고 직장에 다니고 있어요.

A: It seems like they've all found their way. 다들 각자 갈 길을 잘 찾은 것 같네요.

B: Yes, that's true. They don't really listen to their parents anymore. 네, 맞아요. 이제는 부모 말을 잘 들으려고 하지 않아요.

A: I can imagine. They have their own ways of thinking now. 그러겠죠. 이제 본인들만의 생각이 있을테니까요.

B: All I can do is pray that they make good decisions on their own. 스스로 잘 판단해서 결정하기를 기도할 뿐이에요.
