Damaged Passport

 

These days, it seems like more families take advantage of the long weekends around holidays(주말 낀 연휴) to go on trips abroad. I was quite envious to hear that a friend was going to Vietnam with her in-laws during the recent Lunar New Year holiday. I met her after the holiday to hear all about the trip, but she told me a surprising story instead.

​요즘에는 명절마다 긴 연휴를 이용해서 해외여행을 가는 가정이 더 많아진 것 같습니다. 얼마 전 설 연 휴에 친구가 시부모님을 모시고 베트남에 간다고 해서 저는 매우 부러웠습니다. 연휴가 끝나고 여행이 어떠했는지 들으려고 친구를 만났는데, 뜻밖에 놀라운 이야기를 들었습니다.

 

One of the pages in her father-in-law's passport had a small tear, less than one centimeter in length. It was found during passport control at the airport, and it meant he couldn't leave the country. Vietnam doesn't accept emergency passports, so even that wasn't an option. In the end, her father-in-law couldn't go on the trip and had to stay in Korea for the entire holiday.

시아버님의 여권 속지 중 한 장이 1센티미터 미만으로 살짝 찢어져 있었다고 합니다. 그런데 공항에서 수속을 밟는 도중 발견되었고, 그것 때문에 출국을 할 수가 없었다고 합니다. 하필이면 베트남이 긴급 여권이 허용이 안 되는 나라여서 긴급 여권도 불가능했다고 합니다. 결국 시아버님은 여행을 못 가시고 연휴 내내 한국에 계셔야 했다는 것입니다.

I realized that before I travel abroad, I should thoroughly check that my passport is valid for at least six more months and that there isn't any minor damage.

​해외여행을 떠나기 전에 여권 만료일이 6개월 이상 남았는지, 작은 훼손이라도 있지는 않은지 철저하게 확인해야겠다는 생각을 했습니다.

A: Did you remember to pack your passport? 여권 잊지 않고 잘 챙겼어?

B: Yes, of course I did. 응, 당연히 챙겼지.

A: Check to see if any pages are torn. 여권 속지가 찢어진 데 없나 확인해 봐.

B: Huh? Why should I do that? 응? 그건 왜?

A: If even a single page is damaged, you might not be able to leave the country. 한 장이라도 훼손이 되어 있으면 출국을 못할지도 몰라.

B: Really? I've never heard that before. 정말? 그건 처음 듣는 말이네.
