Leasing Real Estate

I am a 30-something woman working in real estate rentals. I own a small building, which provides me with a monthly rental income to live on. With this steady, passive income coming in every month, I thought I didn't need a regular desk job at first. I felt blessed, enjoying a life of leisure and travel while others were working.

저는 부동산 임대업에 종사하는 30대 여성입니다. 작은 건물을 소유해 매달 월세를 받아 생활하고 있 습니다. 매달 불로 소득과 같은 수입이 꾸준히 들어오니, 처음에는 직장에 다닐 필요가 없다고 생각했 습니다. 다른 사람들이 일할 때 유유자적 여행을 다니는 제 삶이 축복받은 것처럼 느껴지기도 했습니다.

I spent several years this way, doing nothing productive. But then, my friends started establishing themselves in their careers and developing expertise. Since I wasn't doing anything, I began to feel left behind. I sometimes even feel self-conscious when I meet new people, worrying they'll ask me what I do for a living. Lately, l've come to realize the value of work.

​이렇게 무위도식하며 수년을 보냈습니다. 그런데, 주변 지인들은 직장에서 자리를 잡고 전문성을 키워 나갔습니다. 저 혼자만 하는 일이 없으니, 도태되고 있다는 생각이 들기 시작했습니다. 새로운 사람들을 만나면 무슨 일을 하냐는 질문을 할까 봐 움츠러들기도 합니다. 노동의 중요성을 실감하는 요즘입니다.

 

To shake off this sense of falling behind, I started studying English. I recently enrolled in the Korea National Open University. I'm working toward a day when I can be confident and proud of myself.

​저는 도태되는 느낌을 지워 보고자, 영어 공부를 하기 시작했습니다. 최근에는 방송통신대에 편입도 했습니다. 꾸준히 공부하며 스스로에게 자신 있고 당당한 제가 될 날을 꿈꿔 봅니다.

Dialogue Practice

A: Don't you own a building? 건물을 소유하고 있지 않으세요?

B: It's not very big. It's just a small building. 그리 크지는 않아요. 그냥 작은 건물이에요.

A: I suppose the rental income from that is enough to live comfortably. 거기서 나오는 임대 소득으로 사는 데 지장은 없으시겠어요.

B: It was nice at first, but not so much anymore. 처음에는 좋았는데, 지금은 그렇지도 않아요.

A: Why is that? 왜요?

B: I envy my friends who are getting ahead at work and finding their place in society. 주변에 지인들이 승승장구하며 사회에서 자리 잡는 모습들이 부럽기도 해요.
