Making Makgeolli

I'm currently taking a break from work. During this time, I wanted to try things that are hard to fit into my usual schedule. I happened to see a class on making makgeolli at a university's lifelong education center. I thought, "That's just the thing!" and signed up for the class.

​나는 현재 휴직 중이다. 휴직 기간에 평소에는 하기 어려운 것들을 해 보고 싶었다. 마침 어느 대학의 평생 교육원에 막걸리 만들기 수업이 있었다. '바로 이거야!' 하는 마음에 수강 신청을 했다.

 

Making makgeolli was more complicated than I expected. Over the course of 10 sessions, I went through multiple steps to make two different beverages. There was also a fermentation process in a cold storage room for about 3-4 weeks. All told, it took almost two months just to make a glass of makgeolli.

​막걸리 만들기는 생각보다 더 복잡했다. 10회차 수업을 받는 동안, 여러 단계의 작업을 거쳐 두 가지 술을 만들었다. 중간에 저온 창고에서 3~4주가량 발효시키는 과정도 있었다. 막걸리 한 잔이 만들어 지는 데 두 달 정도가 걸린 셈이었다.

 

The taste of the makgeolli I put so much effort into was incomparable to the store-bought kind. It had a clean flavor and didn't cause a hangover. The alcohol content was over 18%, so I enjoyed it with a splash of water.

​이렇게 내가 열심히 만든 막걸리의 맛은 시중에 파는 맛과는 비교 불가였다. 깔끔한 맛에 숙취도 없었다. 알코올 도수는 18도가 넘어서 물을 조금 섞어 마시는 것이 좋았다.

B: That's amazing. How does it taste? 멋지네요. 맛은 어떤가요?

A: It's much better than the store-bought kind. 시중에 파는 제품보다 훨씬 더 맛있더라고요.

B: Wow! I'd love to have a taste myself. 와! 저도 직접 맛보고 싶네요.
