At Incheon Airport, there's a unique place called the "Departure Lounge." It has been managed by the Ministry of Justice since August 2022. The Departure Lounge is where foreign nationals who are denied entry into Korea can stay temporarily until their departure.

​인천 공항에는 '출국 대기실'이라는 아주 특별한 장소가 하나 있다. 2022년 8월부터 법무부에서 운영을 맡아 시작하게 되었다. 출국 대기실은 한국에 입국이 허가되지 않은 외국인들이 출국 전까지 임시로 머무를 수 있는 곳이다.

 

In 2023 alone, over 25,000 people passed through this space. If you've seen the Tom Hanks movie "The Terminal," this setting should sound familiar. The person who currently holds the record for the longest stay has been waiting there for a year and two months.

​2023년 한 해에만 25,000명이 넘는 사람들이 이곳을 거쳐 갔다. 톰 행크스 주연의 영화 '터미널'을 보신 분이라면 익숙한 장소이기도 하다. 현재 최장기간 대기자는 그곳에서 1년 2개월째 머물고 있다.

 

Immigration officers monitor and supervise the area around the clock, ensuring that it's as secure as a border checkpoint.
