Reading Books in English

 

My 10-year-old daughter doesn't attend an English academy. Instead, I teach her myself. Up until now, we've used reading workbooks and conversation books, but she finds it difficult and isn't very engaged. So lately, we've gone all in on passively listening(흘려 듣기) to videos and intensively listening(집중 듣기) to books.

10살인 저희 딸은 영어 학원을 다니지 않습니다. 대신 제가 직접 아이를 가르치고 있습니다. 그동안은 리딩 문제집과 회화책으로 공부를 했었는데, 아이가 어려워하고 그다지 흥미를 보이지 않습니다. 그래서 요즘은 영상 흘려 듣기와 책 집중 듣기에 전념하고 있습니다.

 

Since I have to teach her myself, I need to study first, as her mom. I have to know the content to guide her. That's how l've discovered that there is a wealth of fun and useful English books out there. Thanks to my daughter, I'm reading English books on a daily basis and picking up tons of new expressions.

아이를 직접 가르쳐야 하다 보니 엄마인 제가 먼저 공부를 해야 합니다. 책 내용을 알아야 지도를 할 수 있으니까요. 그러면서 세상에는 너무나 재밌고 유익한 영어 원서가 많다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 아이 덕분에 저도 매일 원서를 읽고, 수많은 새로운 표현들을 익히고 있습니다.

 

l even started reading young adult chapter books because of her. Eventually, I'd like to move on to novels as well. Reading English books has become a part of my routine before I go to bed.

​아이 때문에 청소년 챕터북까지 읽기 시작했지만, 점차 소설책도 읽어 보고 싶습니다. 영어 원서 읽기는 자기 전에 꼭 하는 저의 루틴으로 자리를 잡았습니다.

Dialogue Practice

A: It seems like you always carry around an English book. 영어 책을 항상 들고 다니시는 듯해요.

B: Yes, I try to read English books whenever I get a chance. 네, 영어 원서를 틈나는 대로 읽으려고 해요.

A: That's impressive. 멋지시네요.

B: When I'm reading, my daughter sometimes comes over and shows an interest. 제가 읽고 있으면, 딸이 와서 관심을 보일 때도 있어요.

A: She must naturally get curious about the books her mom is reading. 엄마가 읽고 있는 책에 자연스럽게 호기심이 생기겠네요.

B: That's exactly it! 맞아요!
