Communicating with Foreign Patients

 

I have been working as a nurse in(at도 가능) a university hospital for 18 years. When I first started at my job, we only encountered foreign patients on rare occasions. But these days, I meet patients from all over the world.

저는 대학 병원에서 간호사로 18년째 근무하고 있습니다. 처음 일을 시작했을 때는 외국인 환자를 만나는 일이 극히 드물었습니다. 그러나 최근에는 다양한 국적의 외국인 환자들을 만나고 있습니다.

This means I often need to explain hospital procedures or guide patients through medical tests. Sometimes when I have to suddenly speak English, my mind goes blank and I struggle to find the right words.

​그래서 환자에게 병원 절차를 설명하거나 검사 안내를 할 일이 종종 생깁니다. 갑자기 영어로 말을 해야 하는데, 머릿속이 하얗게 되고 적절한 단어가 떠오르지 않을 때가 있습니다.

 

To address this, I always carry around an English guide provided by the hospital. I refer to it or show it to the patients to communicate when needed. Still, I hope to improve my English skills so that I can freely interact with patients without relying on the guide.

이에 대처하고자, 병원에서 나눠 준 영어 안내문을 늘 가지고 다닙니다. 필요할 때마다 참고하거나 환자에게 보여 주며 의사소통을 하고 있습니다. 그래도 열심히 영어 실력을 향상시켜서, 이러한 안내문에 의지하지 않고 환자와 자유롭게 소통하고 싶습니다.

Dialogue Practice

A: There are more and more foreign patients in hospitals these days, right? 요즘 병원에 외국인 환자들이 점점 늘고 있죠?

B: Yes, their numbers are rising compared to before. 네. 예전에 비해서 증가하고 있는 추세예요.

A: You must communicate with them in English. 그러면 영어로 소통을 하셔야겠네요.

B: That's right. We have an English response manual, and I refer to it to help guide them. 맞아요. 영어 대응 매뉴얼이 있어서, 그것을 참고하며 안내를 해요.

A: Still, that must be quite a challenge. 그래도 쉽지는 않겠어요.

B: Yes, l often feel I'm not good enough, so l've been studying English for 30 minutes every day. 네, 부족함을 많이 느껴서, 매일 30분씩 영어 공부를 하고 있어요.
