Conception Dreams
A taemong, or conception(임신) dream, is a type of precognitive dream. These dreams are experienced by the expectant couple, their family members, or close acquaintances. The people who have such dreams learn(=find out) that they are expecting, or tell others they know who are hoping for a baby to check whether they are pregnant.
태몽은 일종의 예지몽이다. 임신한 부부 혹은 그들의 가족이나 가까운 지인들이 꾸는 꿈이다. 이 꿈을 꾼 사람들은 임신한 사실을 알게 되거나, 아기를 기다리는 주변 사람들이 있으면 임신 여부를 확인해 보라고 말해 준다.
Conception dreams are a cultural phenomenon (that is) unique to Korea. Many people believe in them because they often seem to align with reality.
태몽은 한국에만 있는 독특한 문화라고 볼 수 있다. 이런 꿈들이 현실과 들어맞는 경우가 많아서 많은 사람들이 태몽을 믿고 있다.
My mother had the conception dream for our first son. She dreamt of an angel descending from the sky, handing out gold to everyone. My wife had our second son's conception dream. She dreamt that she was scooping up(퍼 담다) wriggling(꿈틀대는/ wiggling 꼼지락 거리는) loaches(미꾸라지) into a basin(베이즌; 대야). I haven't yet experienced it myself, but l'd love to have a conception dream someday and share the good news with someone eagerly waiting for a baby.
우리 첫째 아들의 태몽은 어머니께서 꿔 주셨다. 하늘에서 천사가 내려와 모두에게 황금을 나눠 주었다고 한다. 둘째 아들의 태몽은 아내가 꿨는데, 꿈틀거리는 미꾸라지들을 대야에 퍼 담는 꿈을 꿨다고 했다. 나는 아직 경험이 없지만, 나도 언젠가 태몽을 꿔서 아이를 애타게 기다리는 지인들에게 좋은 소식을 전해 줄 수 있으면 좋겠다.

A: You've been picking at your food lately. Do you have some good news? 요즘 밥을 잘 못 먹던데, 혹시 좋은 소식 있어요?
B: Did it show? I took a pregnancy test, and it came out positive. Two lines! 티가 났나요? 임신 검사를 해 봤는데, 양성 반응인 두 줄이 나왔어요!
A: I thought so! I had a dream yesterday that felt like a conception dream! 그럴 줄 알았어요! 제가 어제 태몽 비슷한 꿈을 꿨거든요!
B: Really? What kind of dream? 정말요? 무슨 꿈이었는데요?
A: I dreamt that a dragon appeared out of nowhere and entered your body. 갑자기 용이 나타나서 당신 몸 속으로 들어가는 꿈을 꿨어요.
B: Really? Do you think it'll be a boy or a girl? 그래요? 아들일까요, 딸일까요?
