Riddles

 

Our eldest child, a grade-schooler, loves asking and solving riddles. One day, he brought home a riddle he learned from his friends and posed it to me. "Mom, what's the smartest bird in the world? The answer is Har-bird." I found it very amusing because it came from my son.

​초등학생인 우리 집 큰 아이는 수수께끼 문제를 내거나 맞히는 것을 무척 좋아합니다. 하루는 친구들에게 배워 온 수수께끼를 저에게 냈습니다. "엄마, 세상에서 제일 똑똑한 새는? 정답은 하버드." 아들이 낸 문제라서 그런지 저는 무척 재미있었습니다.

 

To encourage my son's interest in riddles, I bought him a book of riddles. As he read the book, he started asking his dad riddles. Some of the questions seemed quite challenging to me, but my husband got them right almost immediately.

​수수께끼에 푹 빠진 아들을 위해서 저는 수수께끼 책을 한 권 사 주었습니다. 아들은 책을 읽다가 아빠에게 문제를 내기 시작했습니다. 제가 느끼기에는 제법 어려운 문제들도 있었는데, 남편은 문제를 듣자마자 답을 맞혔습니다.

While answering our son's riddles, my husband sometimes asked riddles of his own, emphasizing the point that he had made them up on the spot(immediately). Hearing them, I realized that there's a fine line between riddles and dad jokes. That would explain why he has a knack for solving riddles.

​아들의 수수께끼에 대답하던 남편은 본인이 즉석에서 만든 문제라고 강조하며 수수께끼를 내기도 했습니다. 남편의 문제들을 들으니, 수수께끼와 아재 개그는 한 끗 차이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 남편이 수수께끼 풀이에 강했던 것은 다 그런 이유였나 봅니다.

A: My son is really into riddles these days. 아들이 요즘 수수께끼에 푹 빠졌어요.

B: Really? He must be at that age. 정말요? 그럴 나이인가 보네요.

A: He's so crazy about them that I even bought him a book of riddles. 너무 좋아하길래 아들에게 수수께끼 책도 한 권 사 줬어요.

B: A whole book? 책까지요?

A: Yes, and now he's constantly asking me riddles whenever he gets the chance. 네. 그랬더니 틈날 때마다 저에게 수수께끼를 계속 내고 있어요.

B: That's great! He can practice his thinking skills that way. 좋네요! 그렇게 하면 머리 쓰는 연습도 되겠어요.
