Space Debris(디브'리';단,복수형태 같음)

 

Recently, a battery pallet ejected from the International Space Station (ISS) crashed into a house in Florida, USA. The accident caused damage to the home's roof and the second-story floor.

​최근 미국 플로리다주의 한 가정집에 국제 우주 정거장(SS)에서 배출한 배터리 팔레트가 추락했습니다. 그 사고로 자택 지붕과 2층 바닥이 손상되었습니다.

 

Space debris(=junk) refers to man-made objects in space that are no longer in use. Hundreds of millions of fragments both large and small are currently orbiting Earth. They pose a threat not only to satellites but also to the ISS and astronauts. These fragments move at a speed of 8 kilometers per second, so even tiny pieces can cause severe damage.

​이와 같이 우주 쓰레기는 우주에서 더 이상 활용되지 않는 인공 물체를 말합니다. 현재 수억 개의 크고 작은 파편들이 지구 궤도를 떠돌며, 인공위성은 물론 국제 우주 정거장과 우주인들을 위협하고 있습니다. 이 파편들은 초속 8킬로미터로 움직이기 때문에, 아주 작은 파편도 큰 피해를 입힐 수 있습니다.

 

Many countries around the world are working to address the issue of space debris. Technologies under research and development include robotic arms, powerful magnets, and nets. I hope we will be able to keep space clean, so that space exploration can be conducted more safely in the future.

​전 세계 여러 국가들이 우주 쓰레기 문제에 대응하려는 노력을 기울이고 있습니다. 연구하고 개발 중인 기술들에는 로봇 팔, 강력한 자석, 그물 등이 있습니다. 우주 환경을 깨끗하게 유지하여, 미래에 우주 탐사를 보다 안전하게 할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

A: There is an enormous amount of discarded objects and debris in Earth's orbit. 지구 궤도에 쓰다 버린 물체나 파편들이 엄청나대요.

B: That could pose risks for future space exploration. 앞으로의 우주 탐사에 위험 요소들이 되겠네요.

A: That's right. I've also heard that even satellites could be damaged. 맞아요. 인공위성들도 손상될 수 있다고 하더라고요.

B: Something needs to be done to address this issue. 이 문제에 대응하기 위해 뭔가 대책을 세워야겠네요.
