Friendly Neighbors

 

In February this year, I moved to a new neighborhood for my children's education. Relocating to a new region meant living far away from my parents and long-time acquaintances. On top of being in an unfamiliar place, the weather was so cold in the winter that I curled up(위축됐다) both physically and emotionally.

​나는 올해 2월에 아이들 교육을 위해 다른 지역으로 이사를 왔다. 지역을 새로 옮기다 보니 부모님과 오래 사귄 지인들과도 멀리 떨어져 살게 되었다. 가뜩이나 낯선 곳인데 겨울 날씨까지 추워서 몸과 마음을 모두 웅크리고 지냈다.

In March, after her first day at her new school, my daughter came home and said, "Mom, there's a kid in my class who looks just like the kid next door." It turned out that the neighbor's child was in the same class as my daughter, and her younger brother also attended the same kindergarten as my son. Both families had a boy and a girl with a similar age gap. It felt like a surprising and delightful connection.

3월이 되어 새 학교에 첫 등교하고 집에 돌아온 우리 딸이 "엄마, 옆집 아이와 닮은 애가 우리 반에 있어."라고 했다. 알고 보니 옆집 아이가 우리 딸과 같은 반인 데다가, 그 아이 동생도 우리 아들과 같은 유치원에 다니는 것이었다. 두 집 모두 남매에 나이 터울도 비슷해서 신기하고도 반가운 인연이었다.​

 

Having a classmate living next door made it much easier for my daughter to adjust to her new school. On days when their schedules match up, they go to the library or play board games together after school. They have been getting along well.

​그렇게 같은 반 친구를 옆집에 둔 딸아이는 새 학교에 아주 수월하게 적응할 수 있었다. 시간이 맞는 날에는 방과 후에 같이 도서관도 다니고 보드게임도 하며 잘 지내고 있다.

A: l'm so grateful for my next-door neighbors sometimes. 옆집 이웃이 너무 고마울 때가 있어요.

B: Oh, it sounds like you get along well with them. 아, 친하게 지내시나 봐요.

A: Our kids are the same age and go to the same school. 아이들이 같은 나이인 데다가 같은 학교를 다녀요.

B: Oh, I see. 아, 그렇군요.

A: Since I'm working, they often look after my kids too. 제가 일을 하다 보니, 우리 애들도 챙겨 주실 때가 많아요.

B: Wow, they must be really warm-hearted people. 와, 정말 마음씨가 따뜻한 분들이네요.
