Old Apartments

 

Our family lives in an old apartment building that's even older than I am. It's the apartment my husband has lived in since he was a child, and I moved in after we got married.

​우리 가족은 나보다도 나이가 더 많은 오래된 구축 아파트에 살고 있다. 남편이 어릴 때부터 살던 아파트인데, 결혼하면서 내가 함께 살게 되었다.

 

There are a few things that really bring home how old the apartment is. Around 7 o'clock, when everyone is getting ready for work, a lot of warm water is used. In our unit on the 11th floor, we don't get enough warm water. Also we sometimes experience power outages in the summer or winter, during times of peak electricity use.

​그런데 아파트가 얼마나 오래됐는지 실감나게 하는 것들이 몇 가지 있다. 모두가 출근 준비를 하는 7시쯤이 되면 온수 사용량이 많아지면서, 11층인 우리 집은 따뜻한 물이 잘 나오지 않는다. 또한 전력 사용량이 늘어나는 여름이나 겨울에는 종종 정전이 되기도 한다.

 

When people hear about these inconveniences, they often tell us to move. But we hope our kids will grow up attending the same schools in the same neighborhood where their dad grew up. One of the charms of this old apartment is its courtyard(건물로 둘러싸인 공터), which has mature cherry blossom and magnolia trees that create a beautiful sight in the springtime.

​사람들은 이런 불편함에 대해 들으면 빨리 이사를 가라고 한다. 그런데 우리는 아이들이 아빠가 자란 동네에서 아빠와 같은 학교를 다니며 성장하기를 바라고 있다. 이 오래된 아파트는 화단에 오래된 벚꽃나무와 목련나무가 있어서 봄에 매우 아름답다는 장점도 있다.

A: Our apartment building is well over 30 years old now. 우리 아파트도 이제 지은 지 30년이 훌쩍 넘었네요.

B: Yeah, it was built in the early '90s, so you're right. 네. 90년대 초에 지었으니, 그렇네요.

A: There are times when it's a bit inconvenient to live in such an old apartment. 구축 아파트에 사는 게 좀 불편할 때가 있기는 해요.

B: I sometimes feel that way, too. 저도 그렇게 느낄 때가 가끔 있어요.

A: But having so many places filled with memories is definitely a plus. 하지만 추억이 가득한 공간들이 많은 것은 분명 장점이에요.

B: I suppose our apartment will go through reconstruction soon as well. 우리 아파트도 조만간 재건축을 하겠죠.
