Cathy: A little. Intonation keeps the audience engaged. 약간. 억양은 청중이 계속 집중하도록 만들지.

Volunteer Kimjang

​

Kimjang is a cultural practice among Koreans where we prepare and share kimchi in large amounts, to make it through the long, cold winter.

김장이란 한국 사람들이 춥고 긴 겨울을 나기 위해 많은 양의 김치를 담그고 나누는 문화입니다.

​

Once a year, I do volunteer work with a charitable organization to share kimchi with neighbors who are in need. While it involves the act of making food, I like that the process allows volunteers to engage in meaningful conversations and share time together.

저는 일 년에 한 번 자선 단체 사람들과 함께 소외된 이웃에게 김치를 나눠 주기 위한 김장 봉사를 합니다. 먹을 것을 만드는 봉사 활동이지만, 그 과정에서 봉사자들이 서로 의미 있는 소통을 하며 함께 시간을 보낼 수 있어서 좋습니다.

After the kimjang is complete, the kimchi is shared with the local community, distributed among those who may feel marginalized. ​Kimjang is a demanding task​ that requires time and effort, thinking about the neighbors who will enjoy the kimchi makes it all worthwhile.

김장이 다 되면, 그 김치는 지역 사회에 공유되어 소외된 이웃들에게 분배됩니다. 김장은 시간과 노력이 필요한 힘든 일이지만, 김치를 맛있게 드실 이웃을 생각하면 보람이 느껴집니다.

What's more, it carries on the fading tradition of kimjang and emphasizes the importance of a sense of community.

게다가 점점 사라져 가는 김장 문화도 이어 가고, 공동체 의식의 중요성도 느낄 수 있습니다.

B: I take the kids along these days and they really enjoy it, too. 요즘은 아이들을 데리고 가는데, 아이들도 참 좋아해요.

A: It's killing two birds with one stone, learning our kimjang culture and doing volunteer work. 우리의 김장 문화도 배우고 봉사 활동도 하고 일석이조네요.

B: It's also a chance to make good memories as a family. 가족이 함께 좋은 추억을 만들 수 있는 기회가 되기도 해요.
