Cucumber Allergies

 

I can't stand the smell of cucumbers. That doesn't mean I don't eat them at all. If there are cucumbers in cold noodles, l'll just eat them. I also eat cucumbers in pickle form when I eat pizza. However, I never eat raw cukes.

​나는 오이 향이 정말 싫다. 그렇다고 해서 오이를 아예 안 먹는 것은 아니다. 만약 냉면에 오이가 들 어가 있으면, 그냥 먹는다. 피자를 먹을 때도 피클 형태로는 오이를 먹는다. 그렇지만 생오이는 절대 먹지 않는다.

 

One of my colleagues at work is severely allergic to cucumbers. She can break out in hives if she eats a cucumber. This type of allergy is more common than you'd think. The cause is a substance called "cucurbitain," which doesn't agree with their body.

​내 회사 동료 중에는 심한 오이 알레르기가 있는 분이 있다. 그분은 오이를 먹으면 몸에 두드러기가 나기도 한다. 이런 형태의 알레르기를 가진 사람들은 주위에 생각보다 많다. 원인은 '쿠쿠르비타신' 이라는 성분이 몸에 맞지 않기 때문이라고 한다.

 

I hope people can be considerate of those who can't eat cucumbers instead of thinking they are strange. If you think about it, don't we all have at least one food that we won't even touch?

​이렇게 오이를 못 먹는 사람들을 이상하게 보지 말고 배려해 주었으면 한다. 잘 생각해 보면, 우리는 모두 정말 싫어하는 음식이 하나 정도는 꼭 있지 않은가?
