Visiting the Cook Islands

 

In December 2023, I visited the Cook island in the South Pacific. The country was named after Captain James Cook. It takes about 24 hours to get there by plane from Korea.

저는 2023년 12월에 남태평양에 있는 쿡 아일랜드에 다녀왔습니다. 쿡 아일랜드는 제임스 쿡 선장의 이름을 따서 국가명을 지은 곳입니다. 우리나라에서 비행기로 대략 24시간을 가야 도착할 수 있습니다.

 

Like most Pacific nations, the Cook Islands are highly vulnerable to climate change. I went there to education people on using climate information to develop strategies to respond to climate change.

대부분의 태평양 국가들과 마찬가지로 쿡 아일랜드는 기후 변화에 매우 취약한 지역이빈다. 저는 사람들에게 기후 정보 활용을 통한 기후 변화 대응 방안을 교육하기 위해 방문하였습니다.

 

I visited areas that had suffered severe damage from tsunamis and listened to many stories. The residents can't access groundwater during droughts, which can be critical. This mad me realize how crucial accurate climate information is for island nations. It also helped me understand the importance of my work.

해일로 인해 피해가 컸던 지역을 방문하여 많은 이야기를 듣기도 했습니다. 가뭄이 오면 주민들은 지하수를 사용할 수 없기 때문에 치명적일 수밖에 없습니다. 그래서 정확한 기후 정보가 섬나라에 얼마나 중요한지 깨닫게 되었습니다. 또한 제가 하고 있는 일이 그들에게 얼마나 중요한 것인지도 실감하게 되었습니다.

B: Yes, I was away for a week last month. 네, 지난달에 일주일 동안 다녀왔어요.

A: Did you travel far? 멀리 가셨어요?

B: Yes, it took about 24 hours, and I took several connecting flights to get there. 네, 대략 24시간이 걸렸고, 거기까지 가는 데 비행기를 몇 번이나 갈아탔어요.

A: That must have been exhausting. 힘드셨겠네요.

B: It did take a bit longer than usual to recover from travel fatigue. 여독이 풀리는 데 평소보다 시간이 조금 더 오래 걸리기는 했어요.
