Purring Cats

 

Right after we got married 10 years ago, my husband adopted two kittens. I didn't know a thing about cats, so I bought two guidebooks and started studying.

10년 전 결혼을 하자마자, 우리 남편은 아기 고양이 두 마리를 입양했습니다. 저는 고양이에 대한 지식이 전혀 없었던 터라, 고양이 가이드북을 두 권 사서 공부를 시작했습니다.

 

One of the unique things about cats is the so-called "cat purr." Cats make a purring sound, mostly when they feel safe and secure. It's not a sound they make with their mouths(마우-ㄷ-즈), but a vibrating sound that comes from the chest.

고양이의 특이점 중에 하나는 이른바 '고양이 골골송'입니다. 고양이는 주로 안정감을 느낄 때 '그르렁' 소리를 냅니다. 입으로 내는 소리가 아니라, 고양이 흉부에서 나는 진동음입니다.

 

Our first cat mainly purrs while eating or when we pet its back. Our second cat is very affectionate and purrs frequently, even from just being brushed. When I hear and feel the purring sound and vibrations from my cats, my worries and pent-up stress all seem to melt away.

저희 첫째 고양이는 주로 사료를 먹을 때, 혹은 등을 쓰다듬어 주면 갸르릉거립니다. 애교가 많은 저희 둘째 고양이는 빗질만 해 줘도 수시로 갸르릉거립니다. 고양이의 갸르릉거리는 소리와 진동을 느끼고 있으면 온갖 근심과 쌓인 스트레스가 사라지는 것 같습니다.

B: Yes, they make that sound when they are in a good mood. 네, 기분이 좋으면 저런 소리를 내요.

A: Oh, really? 아, 그래요?

B: It's a sign that they feel safe and secure. 본인이 안정감을 느낀다는 신호예요.

A: I see. 그렇군요.

B: I can't get enought of that sound. I think it has a healing effect on people. 저는 저 소리가 아무리 들어도 질리지 않네요. 사람들에게 치유 효과도 있는 것 같아요.
