The National Cemetery

 

My grandfather on my mother's side passed away two years ago. I recently went with my parents and younger sister's family to visit him at the National Cemetery('쎄'메테리), where he is buried(베리드). My grandfather was a brigadier(브래그디어) genera(=one-star general) in the army, and a veteran(베더런) of the Korean War.

​우리 외할아버지는 2년 전에 돌아가셨다. 최근에 부모님과 여동생네와 같이 할아버지가 묻혀 계시는 현충원에 다녀왔다. 할아버지는 6.25 전쟁에 참전하셨던 육군 준장이셨다.

 

We went to the columbarium(콜롬'베' 리엄) first. Inside a clear, square glass case was the urn(디 언;유골함) holding his remains. His name, place and year of birth, and the medals he had been awarded were engraved on a plaque(플랰; 위패,감사패,etc.). We offered a prayer. "Father, I'm here," my mom said. "I brought your granddaughters." But she got choked up and couldn't continue.

​우리는 먼저 납골당으로 갔다. 투명한 네모 유리 안에는 유골함이 안치되어 있었다. 위패에는 할아버 지의 성함, 태어난 장소와 연도, 받으신 훈장이 새겨져 있었다. 우리는 기도를 드렸다. 엄마는 "아버지! 제가 왔어요. 손녀들 데리고 왔어요."라고 하시더니, 목이 메어 말을 잇지 못하셨다.

 

My grandparents are no longer with us, but I still vividly remember my grandfather's hearty(꽉 찬듯한) laugh. I also remember my grandmother telling me, when I was newly married, to visit whenever I needed support.

​할아버지, 할머니는 지금 우리 곁에 계시지 않지만, 항상 호탕하게 웃으셨던 할아버지의 모습은 아직도 생생히 기억이 난다. 내가 신혼일 때, 힘든 일 있으면 언제든 집에 놀러 오라고 말씀하셨던 할머니 모습도 기억이 난다.

B: Yes, there are so many things that I still vividly remember. 네, 아직도 생생히 기억나는 추억들이 많아요.
