Shipbuilding

 

I worked at a shipyard for a company that builds ships, for over a decade. The reason I joined the company was that I was captivated by the blue ocean when I first saw it as a child. After that, I vowed to myself that I would live by(바다가 보이는) the sea and searched for a job in the field.

​나는 10년 이상 배를 만드는 회사인 조선소에서 일했다. 조선소에 입사하게 된 이유는 어릴 때 처음 본 푸른 바다에 매료되었기 때문이었다. 그 이후, 바닷가에서 살겠다고 마음먹고 관련된 일자리를 찾았다.

 

On my first day at the company, I was amazed by the sheer(=extreme) scale of the place. Tens of thousands of people were commuting and there were even buses running within the facility( *Until when does the subway run?). I got lost trying to find certain buildings. Ships are larger than your(소위 여러분이 알듯한) typical buildings, so instead of saying "make," we say we "construct" ships.

처음 회사에 출근한 날, 그 규모의 거대에 놀랐다. 수만 명의 사람들이 출퇴근을 하고, 회사 내에 버스까지 다니고 있었다. 특정 건물을 찾다가 여러 번 길을 잃기도 했다. 배는 일반적인 건물보다 더 크기 때문에, 배를 '만든다'고 하지 않고 '짓는다'고 한다.

The process of constructing a ship starts with cutting and attaching huge steel plates to create blocks. These blocks are assembled like Lego pieces in a place called a "dock." Once the ship's shape is formed, the dock is filled with water to float the ship. The ship is then moved to a quay(발음 주의, 키), where the final exterior work is done, and the ship is completed.

​배를 짓는 방법은 우선 커다란 철판을 자르고 이어 붙여서 블록들을 만든다. 이 블록들을 '도크'라고 하는 곳에서 마치 레고 블록처럼 조립한다. 이렇게 배의 모양이 만들어지면, 도크에 물을 채워 배를 띄운다. 그러고 나서, 안벽이라는 곳으로 이동시켜 마지막 외관 작업을 하면 한 척의 배가 완성이 된다.

A: I can imagine. 왠지 그러실 것 같아요.

B: Even now, when I board a ship, I have a habit of examining every nook and cranny. 지금도 배에 타면, 배의 구석구석을 살펴보는 습관이 있어요.
